Durga Puja celebration in Barcelona hosted by the Bengali Cultural Association

Durga Puja 2026 · Barcelona

WHO IS SHE, REALLY?

Not just a goddess. A daughter, coming home.

In the story most Bengalis grow up with, Durga isn't only the ten-armed warrior who defeats the demon Mahishasura. She's also Uma — a married daughter making the trip back to her parents' house once a year, four children in tow, for five loud, chaotic, well-fed days before she has to leave again.

That's the part that quietly gets people at a pandal — more than any hymn. A homecoming, dressed up as myth. Everyone who has ever left home for good understands it immediately.

MORE CULTURE THAN RELIGION

Kolkata's Durga Puja isn't celebrated behind closed doors. It's built in public, by hand, for everyone.

Months before the five days themselves, artisans in Kumartuli are already shaping clay and straw into faces. Neighbourhoods compete not over ritual but over art — pandal design, lighting, theme — turning entire streets into open-air galleries that anyone can walk through, regardless of faith. It's as much a festival of craftsmanship and community organising as it is one of prayer.

Recognised by UNESCO

In December 2021, UNESCO inscribed "Durga Puja in Kolkata" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity — recognising it not just as a religious observance, but as a citywide festival of public art and community that draws in people across faiths, professions and backgrounds.

WHAT SHE MEANS TO US, HERE

In Barcelona, the parallel writes itself.

Every Bengali at our puja has, at some point, been the one leaving home for good — for a job, a degree, a partner, a different life. For five days each October, in whatever hall we can find in this city, we get to be on the other side of that story: the ones being welcomed, loudly, by people who feel like family, even if you met most of them here.

That's what these five days are actually for. The rituals matter. The community matters more.
